Contraband onions continue to plague local farmers

GeneralContraband onions continue to plague local farmers

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. July 4, 2019– On Friday, June 28, the Belize Marketing Development Corporation (BMDC), along with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Extension Services, completed their annual Onion Availability Assessment in the three farming communities which produce onions.

At the end of the exercise, which focused on onion farms in Maskall in the Belize District, and Little Belize and Neuland Settlement in the Corozal District, it was determined that there are sufficient onions to meet the demands of the local market.

The assessment resulted in the confirmation that there are 130,000 pounds of yellow onions in the onion-producing communities, as well as in the community of San Carlos, in the Orange Walk District, said a BMDC press release.

The release added that, “The farming communities expressed that contraband continues to be the major challenge in the marketing of onions. Onion traders, market vendors and the public are encouraged to support our hardworking farmers by purchasing local onions.”

The public is urged to contact the Quarantine Office at the Belize Agriculture Health Authority at 822-0197, the release ended saying.
