Cop charged with extortion

HighlightsCop charged with extortion

Another rogue policeman has been arrested and charged – for an incident involving extortion —one day after a third policeman was charged with theft at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, for stealing $250 from the account of Tyrell Hyde, of Belize City.

(The third policeman to be charged for stealing money from Hyde’s account, Special Constable Joslyn Gill, 30, was granted bail of $4,000 yesterday, Tuesday, at the Belize City Magistrate Court.)

Today, Special Police Constable Dayton Sacasa was arrested in connection with a separate incident. Sacasa is accused of extorting $100 for the release of two prisoners charged with drug possession who were in his custody, and who were under lockdown in the holding cell at the Racoon Street Detention Center.

Police said that at about 10:00 this morning, the men each paid Sacasa $50 and were then released from his custody, but they subsequently reported the matter.

According to police, they were informed that two men detained on possession of controlled drug charges had been improperly released from custody.

An investigation was carried out by the Professional Standards Branch, then Constable Sacasa was informed of the complaint made against him and searched. A $50 bill, a $20 bill and three $10 bills – and one dollar coin – were found on him.

Constable Sacasa was immediately arrested and charged with extortion.
