CrimeCorozal police nab 3 thieves

One was caught with a stolen bicycle

Three thieves are now in police detention at the Corozal Police Station. Two of them were caught red-handed in a store trying to steal a cash pan. The other thief was caught with a bicycle he stole from a man who had just parked it by a Chinese restaurant at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, on 7th Avenue, Corozal Town.

The robbery at the store occurred at about 10:30 this morning, Thursday, at the Miriam Store in the Santiago Layout area in Corozal.

The storeowner told police that she was in her kitchen when she heard her daughter-in-law screaming from inside the shop. She immediately went to see what was happening and spotted a thief entering the store through a window that he had forced open and damaged.

Half of his body was already in the store and he was reaching out and holding her cash pan. The woman immediately reacted and hit the thief with her fist, and he dropped the cash pan and retreated back through the window.

The woman told police that a second man who came into the store at the time, and who was armed with a black gun, began threatening her. He ordered her to hand over the money.

In response, the woman shouted to her daughter-in-law to “hand her the gun,” and upon hearing this, both of the thieves ran, escaping empty-handed.

Police responded to the attempted robbery and searched the area, where they found two teenage boys, 16 and 17, fitting the description of the two robbers. They were immediately arrested.

Then, at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon, Anthony Bell, 57, an electrician of Corozal Town, went to buy some food at a restaurant. He parked his mountain climber gents bicycle, valued at $137.95, against the wall outside the restaurant, and went in and ordered some food.

When Bell exited the restaurant, the bicycle was gone. Police on patrol in the town saw a man riding the bicycle and he was immediately stopped and taken to the Corozal Police Station, where the bicycle was examined, and it was proven to be Bell’s bicycle.

The man was immediately arrested and charged with theft. He will be taken to the Corozal Magistrate’s Court tomorrow to answer to the charges.
