Corozal woman possibly thrown out of truck

GeneralCorozal woman possibly thrown out of truck

Santa Clara Village, Corozal District, Tues. Sept. 21, 2021– On Tuesday, September 21, around 9:26 p.m., police went to a location between Miles 73 and 74 on the Philip Goldson Highway near Santa Clara Village, Corozal, where a red Dodge pickup truck was parked. Just about ten feet off the highway lay the body of Constancia Griceldi Cano, and according to the driver of the truck, Fabio Eudalio Cano, the 33-year-old woman died after she opened the door of the truck while it was in motion and jumped out. However, there are more questions than answers about what exactly occurred. And there are many, including the woman’s mother, who believe that she did not voluntarily exit the truck, but was thrown out.

One cause of suspicion is the fact that Cano, a 54-year-old cane farmer of Concepcion Village, had indicated to police that the incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. that evening, but Constancia Cano’s mother, Carlotta Cano, told local reporters that her daughter, who lived with her in Santa Clara village in Corozal, had sent her a message at about 8:30 that night, and a report was not made to police until three hours after the incident purportedly took place. The mother also indicated that her daughter and the cane farmer frequently had domestic disputes, and that is what has led some, including police, to consider the possibility that she was thrown out of the truck during an argument with the driver, Fabio Cano.

According to Carlotta Cano, her daughter, left the home at about 3:30 that afternoon when the driver of the truck went to pick her up, but, according to the mother, he reportedly had demanded money to pay for diesel, and Constancia Cano had asked her niece to give her $25. Carlotta Cano said that she gave her daughter $10 — all that she had — and her daughter and the driver of the pickup then left. She said that Constancia Cano had wanted to take her son, Eric, with her, but that she had told her to leave the child behind.

In reference to the relationship between Cano and the cane farmer, Carlotta Cano said, “She used to stay with me, but when she used to get upset, she’d go with him. Sometimes he used to take the kid. And the child said they used to argue a lot.”

Police continue to investigate the matter. They are awaiting the results of a post-mortem on Constancia Cano’s body to ascertain if the cause of her death is consistent with Fabio’s account. Fabio Cano was also detained for questioning.

“They are gathering statements, and we’ll leave it like that for now because there were only 2 people traveling in that vehicle at that time, and one cannot answer for herself. So, we will allow the investigators time to gather evidence and see what will take place at the end of their investigation,” said ASP Fritzroy Yearwood, the Police Department’s Director of Communications.
