COVID-19 Update

HeadlineCOVID-19 Update

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Jan. 25, 2021– Recent COVID-19 numbers released on January 25, 2021, show a total of 22 new cases. Sixty persons were declared to be recovered on that day and 3 new deaths — of two men and one woman — were recorded. One of the persons who passed away was from the Belize District, while another was from Cayo, and the other from Stann Creek.

Since the start of our COVID-19 response, the country has tested 67,973 persons to date. At this time, a total of 11,770 persons have contracted the COVID-19 virus in Belize and a total of 11,131 persons— which constitutes 94.6 percent of our total cases — have recovered. Our fatality rate currently stands at 2.49%, with 293 COVID-19-related deaths having been recorded.

Rapid testing continues to take place across the country as the Ministry of Health and Wellness executes its efforts to enhance surveillance, testing, and detection of the virus. The movement restrictions enacted in SI 175 of 2020 are still in place. This means a country curfew remains intact, and unauthorized movement in the Northern districts remains restricted.

On Sunday, January 24, 28 new cases were identified. On that day, 21 recoveries were recorded and no new death was recorded throughout the country. A new team from the Cuban Medical Brigade has also arrived in the country. Just last week, the first cohort of Cuban doctors deployed to Belize to aid in the COVID-19 fight returned home. The Ministry of Health and Wellness welcomes the doctors with open arms and thanks them for giving their service to the country.

On Saturday, January 23, 41 persons were declared to be recovered. From a batch of 312 tests conducted, 22 new infections were found. No new death was recorded on that day.
One new death was recorded, however, on January 22. The person who passed away on that day from COVID-19-related illness was a male from Cayo. The data recorded that day shows 24 new cases from a total of 291 people tested. On that day, 47 persons were marked as recovered.

Globally, the World Health Organization COVID-19 dashboard shows a total of 98,794,942 confirmed cases across the world. Of that number, 2,124,193 persons have died as a result of COVID-19. The Americas lead the regional charts, with Europe and South East Asia rounding off the top three regions with the most infections.

Recently the Biden administration opted to reimpose a ban on various non-USA citizens and territories. Reports from Reuters are that the US will prohibit citizens from the UK, Ireland, and 26 other Schengen areas from entering the United States.
