BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 28, 2020– Recent data released by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has revealed a steady decline in COVID-19 infections across the country. To date, about 926 cases remain active and a total of 9,429 recoveries have been recorded.
Since our last update, 12 new deaths have been recorded, taking the total number of deaths to 236 fatalities. The country’s case fatality rate thus stands now at 2.23%.

Since the onset of the breakout of the virus in Belize, 10,591 persons have contracted the illness. Citizens are asked to continue to adhere to the prevention protocols put in place by the MOHW.

According to data released on December 28, 30 new infections were found across the country. A total of 170 tests were processed and 148 persons were reported to have recovered from the virus.

Three new deaths were recorded — two males and one female person. Two of the deaths occurred in Orange Walk, and the other in Cayo.

Of the 27 persons hospitalized with COVID-19, 5 persons were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit. About eleven new cases were identified in Cayo. The number of new cases in the other districts were all single digits.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness released a compiled report for December 25 to the 27. During that short span, 71 new cases were confirmed from a batch of 589 samples processed. A total of about 200 recoveries were recorded.

Five new fatalities were recorded — four males and 1 female person. Deaths were recorded in all districts except Toledo on that day.

On December 23, 116 new cases were identified from 669 samples processed. No new deaths were recorded on that day and about 131 recoveries were reported.

The previous day, on December 22, however, about 112 new cases were found from a batch of 987 tests done. Two deaths, both females, were recorded,. One of the women was from Orange Walk and the other from Toledo.

On the international scene, more and more countries are restricting the entry of UK residents due to the outbreak of a new variant of the coronavirus in that country.

Many European countries have closed their borders to the UK, which just recently announced another daily record of 53,135 new cases of COVID-19. As mentioned in a previous article, the new strain of COVID-19 is believed to be more contagious than the known variant. It has recently been identified in the United States as well.

Almost 81.5 million cases of COVID-19 have been identified worldwide. A total of approximately 1.8 million deaths due to the virus have been recorded across the world, with the United States having lost over 330,000 citizens.

India, Brazil, Russia, and France are the countries that have been recording the most cases and fatalities globally.
