Cricket Corner – Some teams getting warm

SportsCricket Corner – Some teams getting warm

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Feb. 21, 2019       Pleasant day to all cricket players, fans and supporters! Under the auspices of the Belize National Cricket Association (BNCA), the Harrison Park’s 2019 Cricket Competition continued over the weekend.  Thanks for this year’s sponsor, Bowen and Bowen.

According to stats reaching me, there were all very good games played.

To start, let me take you to Rancho Dolores, where Northern Spirit of Sandhill went up against home team Western Eagles. Northern Spirit took to bat first. These boys really came with a lot of spirits, but the powerful bowling of Caspur Smith and Gareth Joseph, who took 5 and 4 wickets, respectively, cut off the Spirit fast, allowing them to score only 40 runs with two of their batsmen scoring 7 runs each.

After a break, it was time for the Spirit to defend their score. In less time than one could imagine, the game was over, with the loss of only 3 wickets. Dirk Sutherland made 17 of the 42 runs the Eagles batted to win over the Spirit. That game started and ended peacefully.

Then we traveled to Double Head Cabbage, the home of Excellence Cricket Club, where they were going up against Easy Does It from Lemonal. Excellence batted first and scored 172 runs against the focused bowling of Edward Bull, who took 6 wickets. Sydney”Brooksie” Martinez scored 42 of that 172. All previous games between these two teams are always hard fought. Not to say the least, Easy Does It is last year’s champs, while Excellence have won some championships too. Both teams had their fair share of a champ’s feelings.

After lunch break, the Easy boys went to bat. Bowlers and batsmen rallied, and at the fall of the last wicket, Easy Does It fell short under the heavy balls that came from the hands of Ian Broaster, who took 5 wickets. The score was 105. A well-played game! In that inning, Kenroy Reynolds scored 13.

The match between Summer Fever and Rural Mix was not that hard fought, as Team Summer Fever hit the Mix with strong lefts and rights, punching them out for 91, with Derick Henry scoring 33. Maleek Sutherland of Summer Fever took 5 of the Mix wickets.

Summer Fever took to bat then, trying to win that score with the least wickets possible. And this they did by losing only 4. Bernard Sutherland top scored with the number that played in Sunday’s lottery, 31, followed by Jermaine Baizar with 21.

Another hard fought game was between Wicked 11 and Sunrise. The Wicked boys took to bat and, after a long time in the heat of the Saturday sun, Sunrise took out the team for 185 big ones. Aaron Muslar batted 80 runs, followed by Keon Robinson with 28. Zaghi took 4 wickets for Sunrise.

When it was time for Sunrise to take up bats, tensions were high, for 185 is a lot of runs. But again, it’s not over till it’s over. At the fall of the last wicket, Sunrise scoring reached 110. Not enough. Brandon Lewis took 3 wickets for Wicked 11. Ahmad Shiah batted 46.

Then on Sunday, Berlan went up against Bright Star. Berlan went to bat first and scored 127, with Jani making 30 of that score. Terrell Ferguson put down 6 of Berlan stumps.

Then The Star went to bat, but at the fall of the last wicket, only 59 could have been scored, with veteran Glenstein Bennett top scoring with 29. Shyam of Berlan took 5 wickets.

That ended a pleasant day of cricket. So sad that no complete stats reached me for the match played between BDF and Big Deal. However, late reports reaching me is that BDF were successful.

The following matches are scheduled for this weekend:

On Saturday, in Group A – Summer Fever vs Northern Spirit at Sandhill; Western Eagles vs Rural Mix at Isabella; Excellence vs Bandits at Belmopan; Carmelita vs Easy Does It at Lemonal; in Group B – Old Youth vs Wicked 11 at Flowers Bank; BDF vs Sunrise at Lords Bank.

On Sunday, in Group A – Carmelita vs Northern Spirit at Sandhill; In Group B – Berlan vs Big Deal at Boom.
Best of luck, teams!  Respect to all.  Till next week, have fun!
