Divide and conquer – a faltering Puntarenas FC prepares for final battle before the playoffs

SportsDivide and conquer – a faltering Puntarenas FC prepares for final battle before the playoffs
Puntarenas FC, formerly Municipal Puntarenas, was founded on June 30, 2004. Already, this young team had made such a tremendous impact in the Costa Rican first division league.

In the recent tournaments, Puntarenas had consistently placed in the top of the standings and had proved to be a formidable threat to the powerhouse teams, CD Saprissa and LD Alajuelense. Puntarenas came in as a surprise to win the 2006 UNCAF Club Championship by eliminating Alajuelense in the second round, and at the same time outlasting Saprissa. On the local scene, despite being eliminated by Saprissa in the 2006 Apertura, after losing 2 – 0 in the second-leg encounter, Puntarenas became the 2005/2006 National sub-champion.

“Divide and conquer” seems to be the logical phrase which can aptly describe Puntarenas FC’s recent skid of 2 draws and 3 losses. Los Porteños or Los Chuchequeros, as they are affectionately known, were on top for a bit too long. The feeding frenzy has already begun, and the team is breaking up, so to speak, as top teams try to acquire key players. So far, midfielder Michael Barrantes has already signed up with their nemesis, CD Saprissa, for the next season. Yesterday, Adrián Castro, President of the Puntarenas FC, announced that defender Mario Víquez had signed up with LD Alajuelense. There were recent talks that 3 other big names might be leaving the club.

With all these trials and tribulations, Puntarenas FC is taking it in stride as the playoff draws near. Last Sunday at the Miguel “Lito” Pérez stadium, Puntarenas posted a 1 – 0 victory over Liberia, their first in a long time. Puntarenas will be home again for their final game with Santacruceña prior to the playoff.

IFFHS World club ranking: Puntarenas FC #135 as at 02-Apr-07
