DNA tests being done to identify Gardenia remains

GeneralDNA tests being done to identify Gardenia remains

GARDENIA, Belize District, Fri. May 29, 2020– A mechanic of Gardenia who went into the bushes to cut sticks found human skeletal remains, and police were called to the scene, which was about a quarter mile off the Philip Goldson Highway.

An immediate investigation was undertaken to determine whether any persons from the area had been reported missing, and the family of Alfred Seguro, 64, of Biscayne, the neighboring village, who has been missing since March 22, 2018, was contacted.

ACP Joseph Myvett of the Police Department said that when Seguro’s family saw the skeletal remains, they identified the body as that of their loved one.

Police, however, are not certain that the body has been correctly identified, and the bones will be submitted for DNA examination so that a proper identification can be made by the National Forensic Sciences Service.

Seguro’s family told police that on March 22, 2018, he left home early that Thursday morning for an unknown destination. They became worried when he failed to return on Friday, March 23, which was very unlike him.

The family said that it was not customary for Seguro to be away from his home for more than a day, and on the occasions when that occurred, he would return early the next morning and would tell them where he had been. Police were contacted and a missing person report was made.

Police and the family began to search for him, but the effort was fruitless.
