Easter Monday heartache for the Heusner family

FeaturesEaster Monday heartache for the Heusner family

Michael Anthony Heusner was gunned down on his way to a shop

Senseless gun violence in the “city without pity” has once again claimed the life of a parent, the father of a child, 2.

Michael Anthony Heusner, 28, a fisherman of Courtenay Crescent, lay on the pavement on Mahogany Street after being shot multiple times, in the head and chest on Easter Monday night. His mother, Maria Heusner, was devastated when she came to the scene: she sobbed for her dead son as he lay on the street.

The merciless murder occurred about 7:30 p.m. Monday, on Mahogany Street, about 50 yards from its junction with Mopan Street.

Police say that Heusner was walking on Mahogany Street from Mopan Street heading towards Sarstoon Street, when two men riding on separate bicycles rode up behind him and one of them pulled out a firearm and shot Heusner multiple times.

Police say that they retrieved six 40 caliber S&W expended shells from the scene.

Heusner was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital at about 8:19 p.m., where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body awaits a post-mortem.

Maria Heusner told Amandala that they were at home when someone came to their home and told them that Mike had just been shot. They could not believe it, because he had just left the house about five minutes before to buy cigarettes at a Chinese store on Mahogany Street. They all rushed to the area and saw him on the pavement, she said.

His father told us that his son had just finished eating his supper about 7:15 p.m. and had asked his mother for $5, but she had told him that she did not have change and gave him $10, after which he left the house to make his purchase at the store.

The grieving father said that his son was not engaged in gang violence and was a fisherman by profession. They are all at a loss for a reason why he was targeted and killed so mercilessly.

Adding to the disappointment of the grieving mother, the police refused her request to see and hold him before he was taken away to the morgue. She had wanted to cover him with a sheet from his room, but the police took him away before the sheet arrived. She was then told to go to the morgue.

No one has been arrested as yet, and the motive for the murder is also unknown, police say.

Michael Anthony Heusner is the younger brother of outstanding Belizean artist Rachael Heusner, who is representing the Jewel in the arts in the Caribbean.

Michael is survived by his son, 2; his mother, Maria Heusner; father, Mark, Sr.; three sisters, Rachael, Sarina and Elsie Mae; and a brother, Mark Heusner, Jr. He is also survived by a host of relatives and friends.
