Election fevers

FeaturesElection fevers
I noh know about you, but I am flat out enjoying the US presidential elections show on television. I could never be a Democrat. I like their tolerance, but they bend over way too far. I could never be a Republican. I love their toughness, but I think they are very pushy…and way too quick to reach for their hardware.

Hey, switching those channels is a whole lot of fun. FOX TV is all for McCain, while MSNBC seems to like Obama. It’s like the blind men and the elephant when these guys put on the spin. CNN seems balanced, with a little lean for Obama, I think. On my cable (the one that teased us with KREM Television and then took it off), CBS and ABC and regular NBC are out of the loop because they are 50 channels away from CNN.

Ha, things are pretty hot on the home front in Belmopan too. To the surprise of all around here, the smooth Mayor Lopez rolled up his sleeves, dug deep, and turned back H. John Saldivar. Everyone expected the Mayor to go quietly into the sunset when top brass in his party asked him to sail away. I bet H. John thought so too!

The sense around here is that Belmopan rallied to Mayor Lopez’s side because they felt H. John disrespected them by pushing forward a reluctant candidate, Mr. Khalid Belisle. Mr. Khalid might have been Honorable Saldivar’s campaign manager in the last general elections, but he never showed the inclination to be top dog.

Story goes that the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Pete Carillo, was extremely high on the red hierarchy’s hit list too. Pete, a career government engineer, is said to not be sweating enough crimson for the UDP.

The roughness of the election to choose a red Mayoral candidate hurt young City Councilor, Eugene Brown, badly. Long before H. John threw his candidate into the fray to bounce Mayor Lopez from his seat, the popular Eugene, who had publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the Lopez/Carillo/Timmons troika at Belmopan City Hall, had announced his candidacy. The very spiritual, soft spoken Eugene couldn’t get down and wash unwholesome party linen in public, and as a consequence his candidacy got lost. Still, he garnered a formidable 200 votes.

The savvy diehaad PUPs sih di weak fence and are trying to pounce early for the 2009 run. Unfortunately for them, they can’t find a candidate who is willing to have their good name smeared by a party that so recently gaahn mad wid love fu fu we money. Story about is that Ms. Diane Hall (daughter of retired City Councilor, Mr. Dor Hall) and Ms. Maureen Leslie (former? big shot Police Officer) have spurned blue courtship. But the plum might just be too tasty. Imagine what lies in store for the champion who wrests the title from the upstart reds (they never built any city) and takes back the keys to Garden City and lays it at the feet at the Emeritus one at Freedom Hall? It’s a crown to die for.

In all the fracas, little has been heard from the VIP. Last month Party Leader, Mr. Paul Morgan, indicated that they will be fielding a ticket for 2009 but they hadn’t decided on a Mayoral candidate. The Garden City question is: what the heck are they waiting for? There’s a lot of red dust in the air in Belmopan just about now. I’m no first rate pundit, but it is obvious to me that if you are going to collect disaffected red dust you seize the moment when the air is unsettled.

Mayor Lopez is not the type to hold a grudge, and H. John has too much sense not to go hat in hand to mend fences soon. So, the time is now if the VIPees want to reach for the title!

Recall mechanism will be christened in time

I don’t know what is going on round and about Belize, but the wind currents whisper lazy leadership sinks the day. A constituency like Queen’s Square must be tolerant, because their leader has taken up the helm for all of us. Wa, all a dehn bali ya da noh H. Dean Barrow. How is it possible to be the “man” in a little constituency and some (many) haven’t seen your face since February?

But, dis ya time da noh like befo time. Dehn could deh deh di simpa. Some wan a these lazy UDP area reps will christen the new recall button.

I think that 30% is a piece of cake to rally for to initiate the recall. There’s no pot of gold awaiting me at the end of the recall rainbow, so it profits me nada to sneak up on the ones sitting on the crowns. Yap, this piece is all about sound advice.

Some area reps are thinking that their party will rally around them if any heat comes their way. Braa, we will not necessarily press the recall button because we want to change colors! Yap, if we don’t get the leadership we want, we most likely will be setting eyes on a horse flying the same red color. And what if party brass decides to come down heavy, like PUP, for party unity? Well, UDP area representatives should still be especially wary, because a 25-6 majority means they are very, very dispensable. No, the government will not risk the ship to save a haas that belong da pasture.

Forewarned, forearmed. Struggling civilians don’t want the extra sweat but we can’t afford to wait out five long years of disinterested leadership.

P.S. I am not sure but the sense is that an area rep would not be able to defend their title if 30% in their constituency wants their head. To be fair, more than 50% should have to make the call for an area rep to be denied the opportunity to defend their seat. If it is so that 30% can take down an area rep, then the plot is very simple. Every seat is in danger, so the red and blue will do what they usually do: collude to defeat the people.

Camalote softball

Okay, Camalote Cristal Parrot got bombed by the famous Mr. Lashley in the championship game at the National Softball Tournament. Those of you who don’t know the innards must wonder why so many people were calling Love TV’s Patrick Jones to ride against us. Well, we been on top of the heap for so long…

Many Camalote people were rooting for BTL. The deal on that is that the Davis sisters, the biggest stars on Telemedia (Joleen Davis is arguably the best player in Belize) are nieces of the legendary Cynthia Casey. Dehn gyal baan an grow up da ‘lote.

Many villagers were riding against Cristal Parrot because of rivalry business in the Cayo League. The softball team from Belmopan is led by legendary Camalote fireballer, Sherlene Banner, and features former All Everything shortstop, Brigette Flowers Fuller, former All Belize catcher, Karen Casey, and a few others from Camalote. Then there is Camalote Playerade, formerly the mighty Camalote Duurly’s Cristal.

I am proud that our girls didn’t quit. I am especially proud of the effort of our pitcher, Shandy Orellano. Shandy doesn’t have the big fastball like her cousin Sherlene Banner, so she gets by with guile. When fatigue set in, it was batting practice for BTL lumber. Kenisha Sutherland, who I feel has the talent to pitch Belize to the Olympics, couldn’t pick up the pieces because she is just going through the motions. Blame it on the people who lead softball in Belize. There just ain’t any incentives for the girls to put out for the game.

I don’t know if we’ll come back stronger next year. After so many years of Duurly’s Cristal dominance, Camalote is in satta mode.
