HeadlineEx-common-law murders new common-law

SAN IGNACIO, Cayo District, Wed. June 10, 2020– According to police reports, at about 1:00 this morning in San Ignacio, David Valencia, 44, the ex-common-law husband of Sheldeen Evans, killed Evans’ new common-law husband, Robert Hurley, 69.

Valencia was working as a maintenance worker at Evans’ and Hurley’s house on the George Price Highway, located between San Ignacio and Benque Viejo. He lived in the lower flat, while Hurley and Evans lived upstairs, in what looked like an unfinished flat.

Police said that three of them were drinking at Hurley’s house when, at about 10:00 last night, the couple asked Valencia to leave, and he left. Evans and Hurley then went to bed, but Valencia came back later, at about 1:00 a.m., and went into the house and into the bedroom, and told Hurley to pay him the money he had worked for.

Evans said that they told him to come in the morning when the bank would be open, but Valencia insisted that they give him the money, and there was an argument.

Police said that Valencia then took out a butcher knife from his pants and attacked Hurley, stabbing him in the chest, and slashing his back. He also attacked Evans.

Valencia’s daughter whom he fathered with Evans was in another room, and he quickly awakened the little girl, 9, and escaped with her out of the house, Evans told police. He left Evans’ other daughter in the house. The children had been sleeping in another room when the attack occurred.

Police went to the house and found the little girl missing. Hurley was seen motionless on the bed, and Evans was seen with an injury in her shoulder. They were taken to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where Hurley was declared dead on arrival and Evans was treated for her injury.

Superintendent Henry Jemmott, Commander of San Ignacio police, said that they began an immediate search of the area to find the suspected killer, the little girl and the murder weapon.

Motorists traveling on the Benque Viejo Road after the murder/kidnapping told police that they saw a man walking on the road with a little girl. Police set up a road block and searched vehicles coming into San Ignacio from Benque Viejo, and at about 5:00 this morning, a passenger bus that was traveling to San Ignacio from Benque Viejo was stopped and searched, and Valencia and the little girl were found on the bus. Valencia was immediately arrested and his little daughter was taken to safety.

David Anthony Valencia, 44, a laborer of Unitedville, is now facing a murder charge. Superintendent Jemmott said that a file is being compiled and will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for her direction.

Police believe that jealousy was the motive for the deadly attack. They believe that Valencia became angry and jealous when he saw his ex-common-law wife and his daughter living with another man.

Jemmott said that police went back to the area where the murder occurred, and after a search, they found a butcher knife, with what appeared to be blood on it, on the ground in some bushes. This knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was sent to the National Forensic Science Service for testing.
