BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 15, 2014

Kiran Moguel, 8, a student of Corozal Town who suffered massive head and body injuries in a traffic collision that occurred in Chetumal, Mexico, was allowed to die at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Thursday after doctors declared him brain dead.

When Moguel was transferred from the Chetumal General Hospital to the KHMH, doctors rushed him to the Intensive Care Unit, where he was put on life support. After he was examined, doctors declared that he was brain dead, and that nothing more could be done to help him.

After a consultation with Moguel’s family, the life support unit was unplugged and Moguel was allowed to pass away. His body was taken to the morgue, where it awaits a post-mortem to certify the cause of his death.

The accident that caused his death occurred at about 4:30 Monday afternoon at an intersection on Avenida Heroes, in the area of the New Market, in Chetumal.

Kiran and his mother, Esther Moguel, were travelling in the pan of a pickup truck from Chetumal to Corozal when a vehicle slammed into the rear of the pickup, hurling the mother and son into the air, and they landed on the pavement.

Kiran suffered massive head and body injuries, and Moguel suffered serious injuries to her arms and shoulder. Her right hand was reportedly broken in two places. They were both taken to the General Hospital in Chetumal.

That Monday evening, doctors at the Chetumal General Hospital declared that Kiran was brain dead, and that nothing more could be done to help him.

Reports are that Zacarias Copo, of Corozal, the driver of the pickup truck in which Esther and Kiran were traveling, has been detained by Mexican authorities in Chetumal, and remains in custody pending the outcome of their investigation.

A report to us is that police there are contending that Copo had driven past a red light, which caused the collision.
