The following is an analysis of a portion of a speech given by the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, on July 24, 2021, and posted on Youtube by RompevientoTV. The analysis was done by Fernando Buen Abad, who holds a doctorate in Philosophy and Communicational Philosophy, in an interview with Ernesto Ledesma and Alberto Najar.
Alberto Nájar: “Let’s keep Bolívar’s dream alive. It is a phrase that has penetrated a lot, since I was a student. For some time, I realized that phrases like these always annoy, always cause sting in very conservative groups and that is why I have the impression, Fernando Buen Abad…. which is why the reaction to the speech of the president of López Obrador has been quite intense. At least what I have seen, it reminds me precisely that for a long time, decades, there’s been a belief even longer that has not bothered them that it is exactly the opposite of what Latin America has lived already in its most recent history, almost a century. What evaluation do you, Buen Abad have, of this speech by President López Obrador and how they saw it, how you see it from Buenos Aires.”
Fernando Buen Abad: “Well, first of all, I always greet you with a grateful hug for your hospitality and trust. This is a very valuable question about how that speech by President López Obrador looks from here, because we have a map of very different sensitivities in Latin America regarding what is proclaimed in Mexico, in this stage of Mexico, which certainly, throughout this old neoliberal period in the back of Latin America, he insisted on breaking the important deep and old ties, ties that we have had with all the peoples of the great homeland and that now in a relatively short time has had expressions in another sense of unity, brotherhood, proximity. So it is heard very differently in Chile that right now is discussing the new constitution, the message of a president who calls for the unity of our peoples.
“ It is heard very different in Argentina that today an electoral process is being prepared to fight with the right closest to neo-fascism that one has been able to see with the handing over of the country to the International Monetary Fund, of indebting the country even in the most criminal way possible, because in this climate the words of President López Obrador have a different flavor because it reminds them of San Martín, as he did in his own voice, because he remembers the meeting between Bolívar and San Martín, that this means the unity of our peoples in a task that is perhaps the one that most scandalizes the right, which is the task of independence, an unfinished task, a task that must necessarily be completed yet that has been celebrated for all these years as a beginning and some, even provisionally, I always say I celebrate anniversaries at the conclusion of them having completed.
“The independence processes are still a long way off, and so this reaches deep into Peru, at this time in Peru, López Obrador’s voice means the vindication of peoples that today are fighting against a most absolutely aberrant and toxic right wing. The voice of President López Obrador is heard totally different, for example, in Ecuador, at this time where the president of Ecuador himself is seeing how the central bank delivers to the international banks as the country is given back to the monetary fund. Then, the president López Obrador is heard totally different in a Colombia that today is struggling to shake off the dictatorship of the mafias, drug companies, and government that they have, poor people suffering so long, so long ago and what to say about how it sounds today in a speech like that of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Venezuela, like saying what it sounds like in Panama, what it sounds like in Nicaragua, what it sounds like in Cuba itself. In other words, it is a voice that has traveled the continent in a matter of minutes with a breath that is the breath of the great network of independent thinking and feelings.
“ I agree that perhaps it is for historical reasons, because of the historical axis in which this speech appears, one of the most outstanding but also one of the most challenging by Lopez Obrador and also because he put his finger on an open sore called OAS, he put his finger on a circumstance that is perhaps one of the greatest embarrassments that we have had to suffer in this continent called Almagro, which is the Secretary General of the OAS who, in addition to being a traitor to his own original cause, he has been subservient to all the coup interests and if you do not have to ask the Bolivian people, it is where today the voice of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rings and resounds with a breath of empowerment. So for every concept I think we have to celebrate it, we also have to celebrate that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador opened a chapter to make visible a debate in which we are very late, which is the integration of Latin America in the same sense of independence struggle, we are behind in Mexico.
“ I believe in diverse political fronts, because, in my opinion, the debate on the reality of the peoples of Latin America and the political tasks of integration that interests us cannot continue to be a permanently postponed agenda for economic, political and historical reasons, but rather also because the time when the empire has decided to attack in a much more furious way, much more maddened, any vocation of little democracy in Latin America, so in addition to celebrating it, I do not celebrate the speeches of President Lopez Obrador in a dogmatic way. No, I am not interested in that, it is useless, it must be said that if all these words that he spoke yesterday in front of the cancilleres of CELAC and Latin America, because if that today represents an act of political significance, it is not because it is a nostalgic memory of the independence victories in Latin America but because it is a call to action in the short, medium and long term to complete the tasks of independence.”
