Football family mourns loss of former footballers, now doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra

SportsFootball family mourns loss of former footballers, now doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 14, 2020– There is no sporting activity in Belize right now, but still the Covid-19 invasion continues to rock the nation.

We were just recovering from the loss by heart attack on Wednesday of Partridge Street institution and former St. Martin’s primary football championship coach, Lloyd “Panades” Flowers, and on Thursday by lung cancer of Plaza legend Gilroy “Coro” Usher, which occurred in New Jersey, USA. Lloydie was laid to rest at Lord Ridge Cemetery yesterday afternoon; and Coro’s funeral is reportedly set for Thursday of this week in New Jersey.

But, among the almost daily reports of mortalities from Covid-19 in Belize, the weekend saw a double-blow for both the football family and medical community.

Over the weekend, among the increasing number of Covid-19 victims were young doctor twins, Kevin and Kenneth Guerra, who reportedly succumbed to the disease on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both brothers were football players on their Mopan Technical High School team as well as on youth national teams just a decade and half ago.

Among the many expressions of condolence to the family yesterday were Facebook messages from the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) and from national team hero, Deon McCaulay, who is currently the star striker on Ginka University FC at the UPSL playoffs in the USA.

Medical community honors doctors

Also in a Facebook post yesterday, the Medical community requested the cooperation of the Ambulance and Fire Station in each district to conduct a vehicle parade and sound their sirens at 6:00 p.m. in honor of both doctors who died fighting in the line of duty. Sirens were heard around some streets of Belize City yesterday after 6:00 p.m., but the impromptu effort may need to be repeated after more citizens are well informed.

The sports desk joins in expressing our sincere condolences to the families of both young men, and to all the families mourning the loss of their loved ones in these trying times.

Below are the Facebook posts by Deon McCaulay and then by the FFB.

by Deon McCaulay:

Sun. Dec. 13, 2020– RIP and Rise in Glory los jimelos Kevin and Kenneth! It was a pleasure to grace the football field with you and against you both; games I honestly didn’t win because you guys were really incredible players and Mopan Technical high school was a Powerhouse. Thank you for your service; being frontline workers you guys are the true definition of putting your life on the line for others. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believe in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. Deepest condolences to your families.

by Football Federation
of Belize (FFB):

We cannot begin to understand the heartache their families and friends must be feeling, but we take a moment to send our love and support. Wherever you are, we ask that you share a moment of silence in their honor.

May their souls Rest In Peace!
