BELIZE CITY, Tues. Aug. 17, 2021– A retired BDF captain, who is a well-known LGBT activist, is set to return to the San Pedro Magistrate Court on October 15, 2021, after meeting bail on Monday, August 16, for a single charge of wounding.

The retired female soldier, Derricia Salazar, who is the managing director of Our Circle (OC), which is an organization that promotes gay rights, was arrested on the wounding charge after a woman, since identified as Shanira Perez, alleged that she stabbed her in the face at a hotel in San Pedro known as San Pedro’s Inn on Sunday, August 15, at around 2:00 a.m. (during curfew hours) while they were in attendance at an event known as the “Pride Island Getaway”. (So far, there has been no indication that charges will be brought for violation of the curfew and for the holding of a social gathering.)

Perez, who is reportedly a supporter of the Our Circle organization which is Salazar’s employer, told police that Salazar stabbed her in the face, causing a large stab wound.

A medico-legal form classified the injuries as wounding. Salazar was offered and met bail of
$2,000 and was subsequently released.

In a release issued by Our Circle following the incident, the organization stated, “Earlier this week, the Board of Our Circle was informed about a stabbing incident which occurred between our Managing Director, Derricia Jael and a participant at the Pride Island Getaway.
The participant, Shanira Perez, a longtime supporter of Our Circle, reported to the San Pedro Police that she was wounded in an altercation with Derricia Castillo-Salazar at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 15th, 2021.”

The release goes on to state, “On behalf of the Board of Our Circle, the President, Denae Fairweather, states: ‘We are terribly disappointed that such an incident occurred at an initiative spearheaded by Our Circle, especially during PRIDE week. Even more so that it included a longstanding member of the organization and one of our employees.”

Salazar was granted a leave of absence by the organization.
