Harry Pilgrim hospitalized in Guatemala City following traffic accident

GUATEMALA CITY, Mon. June 5, 2023

Harry Pilgrim, the General Secretary of the Belize Athletics Association (BAA) is currently hospitalized in Guatemala City after being involved in a traffic accident on his way to the Central America Athletics (CADICA) U-18 and U-20 Championships that took place this past weekend.

Our information suggests that he was driving alone sometime the night of Thursday, June 1 when the vehicle he was travelling in flipped and crashed into a tree. The incident is reported to have happened about an hour into his drive into Guatemala. A representative from the Association told Amandala that Pilgrim was scheduled to take a flight to Guatemala City but opted instead to drive so he could ferry between the two venues where the championships were taking place. That same source told us he already underwent surgery which was a success and he is now stable. Our first source indicated that his family expects he will remain in Guatemala City for about two weeks while he recovers.

Members of Pilgrim’s immediate family travelled to Guatemala City on Saturday to be at his side.

Pilgrim is known as a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Belize and practices in the insurance business, being a retired Regional Manager for Sagicor Capital Life’s operation in Belize.

Known among friends as “Harry P” from his days as a top sprinter in Belize, he has remained an active member of the athletics community over the years.

While congratulations are in order for the athletes that represented Belize at the CADICA Games over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 & 4, reportedly winning a number of medals (we should have details on those in our Friday issue), our thoughts tonight are with Harry P and his family and friends, as we join them and the athletic community in wishing and praying for his successful recovery.
