BELIZE CITY, Mon. Nov. 30, 2020– Yet another member of the People’s United Party has contracted COVID-19 following the recent general elections, which many had feared would be Belize’s most recent “super spreader” event.

A mere three days after the elections, it was reported that Toledo East area representative and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, Hon. Mike Espat, had contracted the virus and required hospitalization due to complications.

The following day, another PUP Minister, area representative for Cayo West, Hon. Jorge “Milin” Espat, announced that he, too, had contracted the virus.

Subsequent to that announcement, Hon. Espat also had to be hospitalized and remains in the hospital.

Last Wednesday, November 25, Espat took to social media and posted that he was still hospitalized, but that the prognosis was good and he also said, “[I am] anxiously awaiting for the day that I can go back to serving you all.”

Perhaps the most alarming of the recent COVID-19 infections, though, has been that of Prime Minister John Briceno. Last Monday, November 23, a press release came from his office confirming that he had in fact contracted the virus.

Unlike his colleagues, Hon. Briceno has not required hospitalization and has appeared on several talk shows, seemingly in good spirits, as he remains in self-isolation at home.

Briceno’s family also had to be tested, but so far, no other family member of his has received a positive test after their second round of testing this week.

The most recent member of the PUP to contract the virus, however, is the area representative for Belize Rural Central and the Minister with responsibility for Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia.

The Minister announced on Sunday that she and her family have all tested positive for COVID-19. Hon. Dolores stated that she, too, is at home in isolation and has urged the Belizean public to continue to exercise caution.

Thus far, Cabinet has still been working remotely via virtual conferences and will continue to do so until it has been deemed safe for them to hold physical meetings once again.
