SportsINSIDE TELEMEDIA BDBA U-15 & U-17 TOURNEY

In the final week of regular season games played on Friday and Saturday last, it was Plaza getting the better of YMCA by the final score of 47-37 in U-15 play, behind Mark Thompson 13 pts and Gavin Murillo 9 pts. Meanwhile, for YMCA it was Jovan Usher with 14 pts in the loss. U-17 SJC Wildcats won by forfeit over Civic Boyz, who closed out the 2011 campaign winless. On Sunday afternoon, U-15 Eagles won by forfeit over Boom Celtics, while neither U-17 Seh Sorry or YMCA cared to show up for their final match of the year, thereby forfeiting the game. In games decided on the court, the U-15 Yabra squad demolished Blazin Blazers by the final score of 55-40, as Jervis Samuels and Devin Parham hit for 11 pts and 10 pts, respectively, in the win. Meanwhile, for Blazin Blazers it was Rodney Morris totaling 18 pts 12 rebs, followed by Devon Arnold with 11 pts. In U-17 play, it was Caye Caulker edging out Hattieville by the score of 42-41, behind the big play of Charles Hinks 16 pts, and Osmin Arana 14 pts. For Hattieville it was Talib Marin with 12 pts.

INSIDE TELEMEDIA/DANGRIGA U-15 & U-17 TOURNAMENTS

Two games were played this past Saturday, one in the U-15 and the other in the U-17 category. In the first game, U-15 Benguche Celtics, who suffered a heartbreaking 1-point loss last week versus Hopkins, looked to redeem themselves against the Junior Spartans. New additions Erwin Middleton and Rasheed Ogaldez combined to score 8 of Benguche’s first 10 points, to give them an early 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams seemed evenly matched, but the Junior Spartans could not seem to catch up, and still trailed by 2 at the end of the third. At the start of the fourth, the Junior Spartans came out with a half court trapping defense that confused the Benguche squad. As a result, they outscored the Celtics 16-8 in the fourth, to walk away with the win and improve to a 2-0 record. Lesley Williams of the Junior Spartans led the way with 8 points and 10 rebounds. The Junior Spartans are the only undefeated team in the U-15 division.

The second game featured the two teams at the top of the U-17 standings: Harlem and Foreshore Spartans. Both teams came in sporting 3-0 records, outstanding guard play, and dominant rebounding frontcourts. This much anticipated matchup featured the two best guards of the season in Egbert Martinez of Harlem and Hubert Usher of the Spartans. This game also had two of the top 3 rebounders in Dominique Nicholas (13.8 rpg) and Jordan Walters (13.0 rpg). Something had to give. Trevon Mitchell forced the issue early, scoring 12 of the Spartans first 16 points, and willing them to an 8-point halftime lead. That was all he scored for the game, but it included going 8-8 from the free throw line, and causing early foul trouble for Harlem center Shai Peters. After a big double-double last week, Peters had to sit most of the second half, and the Spartans continued to attack the basket, opening up the lead to 12 by the third quarter. The game seemed out of reach until Harlem’s leading scorer Egbert Martinez took matters into his own hands. Martinez had 9 points through 3 quarters, but exploded for 15 in the fourth. Martinez finished with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Led by Martinez, Harlem launched a frantic comeback, cutting the Spartans lead to 2 with 28 seconds to go. Securing the rebound after two missed Spartan free throws, usually sure-handed point guard for Harlem, Brandon Castillo fumbled the balled on his way to tie the game. The Spartans picked up the loose ball and the victory, to remain the only unbeaten team in the BTL U-17 tournament. Next for Junior Spartans is Hopkins (Mar-12-2011). Next for Foreshore Spartans is Cadet Trailblazers (Mar-12-2011).

The 2011 Telemedia/San Ignacio U-15 & U-17 tourneys, similarly like Belize City, is fast winding down, with just a handful of games remaining on the regular season schedule. This past Saturday afternoon, three games were decided, with U-15 Benque Youths winning their fourth game of the season, in a hard fought battle against Young Stars, winning by the final score of 14-13. Talk about team distribution, seven players scored 2 pts each for Benque Youths; while contrastingly, one player in Jamie Carbajal had 11 of Young Stars’ 13 pts. Leonel Chuc struck for 7 pts in Natius’ win over Benque Eagles by the score of 22-15 in U-17 action, while Mark Tesecum contributed 8 pts for the Eagles. Ball Stars destroyed Mount Carmel High School in U-17 play, 53-19, behind Nigel Daly 10 pts and Marlon Andrewin 9 pts.

On Sunday evening’s four-game ticket, Benque Youths earned their fifth win when they walloped All Stars by the final score of 46-15. Brian Galvez hit for 21 pts, followed by Justin Ford 11 pts. For the All Stars it was Nigel Daly leading the way with 5 pts. In the three U-17 games that followed, it was Natius narrowly defeating Shooters 34-32, behind Brian Williams 10 pts. Ball Stars over Hydro Power, 65-24, behind Christian Aldana 13 pts and Santiago Clark 12 pts. And Benque Eagles over Mount Carmel, 42-23, as Gustavo Pech exploded for 16 pts.
