Jamie Chavarria, 19, walks from murder charge

CrimeJamie Chavarria, 19, walks from murder charge
Jaime Chavarria walked out of the Supreme Court this morning, freed of the double murder charge that had been hanging over his head. But his two co-defendants, Danny Anderson and Edwin Flowers, will have to stand trial for the March 2007 murder of Kevia Leslie, 24, and Dorian Michael, 32.

Chavarria was freed after Crown Counsel Trienia Young entered a nolle prosequi this morning in the Supreme Court of Justice Adolph Lucas. The DPP did not elaborate on why the nolle prosequi was entered.

Around 11:30 p.m. on the night of March 25, 2007, Michael and Leslie were abducted from the gas station on Freetown Road. The men were taken in the maroon-colored van that Michael was driving, and were ordered to drive to a feeder road near the Haulover Bridge.

It just so happened that the body of a man had been discovered in the vicinity of the same feeder road, and police had posted two policemen to stand guard over the body, in the hopes that someone “with an interest” in it might come by.

The two abducted persons and their abductors arrived near the spot where the policemen were posted. What the policemen did not expect, however, occurred right there on the dark feeder road. The two persons were hauled from the van and shot in the head.

The policemen could not react to the situation, because it was dark, and even if they had had guns, they had nowhere to take cover if a gunfight had erupted between them and the killers.

Immediately following the shooting, the van sped off into the night. The two policemen could not follow the killers because they had no vehicle at the time.

The remaining two accused men are to return to court on June 22, 2009.

Danny Anderson is being defended by attorney Jeremy Courtenay, while Deshawn Arzu is defending Edwin Flowers.
