“Jump ropes” for Belize District primary schools

press release“Jump ropes” for Belize District primary schools

BELIZE CITY, Tues. Sept. 8, 2015–Primary schools in the Belize District that participated in the “Jump Rope for Health” training conducted by Ms. Shauna Thomas of Caribbean Sports & Development Agency (CSDA) out of Trinidad & Tobago will be receiving their jump rope packages to introduce this programme to their schools leading up to the National Jump Rope Competition to be announced at a later date.

The Hon. Herman Longsworth, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports with direct responsibility for Youth & Sports, will be distributing the jump ropes on Thursday, September 17, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rogers Stadium Basketball Court in Belize City.

(Ed. Note:  “Skipping” rope was a popular past time, especially for young girls, in Belize City “back eena di day.”  There were even interesting lyrics that the two girls on the ends swinging the rope would chant while the one in the middle jumped to the varying speed of the rope.  The boys would sometimes join in the fun.  I recall, “high house, low house, pig pen, fowl koub, dawg siddown;” and “rich man, poe man, begga man, tief, lawya, dacta, policeman, chief;” all to the rhythm of the jumps over the skipping rope. Good move, Sports Council.  More interactive outdoor “fun and games” for the kids can only lead to a healthier and happier Belize.)
