BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 17, 2015–A man who was walking home along with his friends from the BTL Park on Newtown Barracks, at about 3:10 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, died in the hospital after he was attacked by about 10 men, who beat him severely, and then ran a vehicle over him and sped away.
The victim, identified as Joel Bishop, 29, of Belize City, suffered massive internal injuries and also injuries to his head. He died about 9 hours later at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
His three friends, who also fell victim to the attack that caused Bishop’s fatal injuries, were declared to be in stable condition. One of them has been released from the hospital. Bishop’s body has since been taken to the morgue, where it will undergo a post-mortem exam to determine the cause of his death.
Police reports are that they went to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and saw some men who had suffered various degrees of injuries after they were attacked by a group of men.
At the KHMH, police saw Mark Benguche, 22, of Croton Lane, with a cut wound on the left cheek; Austin Rowland, 28, of Oleander Street, with a cut wound on the right ear and forehead; and Eugene Arana, 21, of Brown Street, with three stab wounds in the right shoulder; while Joel Bishop, 28, was seen unconscious, with injuries to the face and a fractured leg.
Police’s initial investigation revealed that the men were socializing in the BTL Park, and when they were walking home, at about 3:10 in the morning, upon reaching in front of MCC Stadium, they were attacked by about 10 men.
Austin Rowland and Eugene Arana remain in a stable condition at the KHMH, while Mark Benguche was treated and released.
Police’s investigation led them to a vehicle which has since been impounded, and several persons have been detained for questioning.
One witness of the incident reportedly told a relative of Bishop that Bishop was beaten badly by the group of men, who kicked and stomped him repeatedly until he became unconscious. While fleeing the area, one of the vehicles the men were in ran over Bishop.
So far, no one has been arrested for Bishop’s brutal death.
A relative of his said that he was not involved in gangs or violent activity, and they want justice for his death.
