League election results challenged by F.C. Belize, Electoral Committee mum

SportsLeague election results challenged by F.C. Belize, Electoral Committee mum
The FFB’s Electoral Committee, which has been a compliant tool of the FFB incumbents in getting challengers disqualified from participating in the district association elections (in Belmopan, in Belize District, in Stann Creek, and in Corozal), finally delivered its press release (see above) on Friday evening, January 6, with the results of the December 28 elections for the executive of the new Premier League.

There were no disqualifications of nominated candidates in the League elections, in which slates led by two former BPFL Commissioners, Jaime “Myito” Perdomo and Sergio Chuc, ended up sharing members on the elected executive. Al Westby, Wilhelm Miguel and Celso Carcamo won from Sergio’s slate; but Sergio lost to Myito in the run for President. The other executive position went to Onan McLean from Myito’s slate. (Both Myito and Sergio have declared themselves to be against the entrenched FFB incumbents.)

However, information reaching our sports desk is that one League club had written the Electoral Committee on January 5, the day before the above press release, requesting that the Committee investigate “as promptly and thoroughly as possible” allegations that “the president elect of the league as well as other elected executive member may possible (sic) stand in violation of section 30.4 of the league statutes” which states that Executive committee members “must not have previously been found guilty of a criminal offence.”

Up to today, the concerned club manager, Ian Jones of FC Belize, has not received the courtesy of a reply from the Electoral Committee, and club owner Lionel Welch has indicated that they intend to pursue the matter further. According to the club’s letter, they believe “that before any League business or activities are initiated or proceeded with, all lingering matters such as this must be dealt with in accordance with the League statutes.”

For his part, Myito says he has discussed the situation with member clubs and has received their support, despite whatever obstacles, to push forward with the plans and programs of the new Premier League.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Committee, which has heretofore been a stickler for details, and quick to strike down all appeals, has been quiet on the matter.

We’ll keep an eye on this situation. For now, the top priority for most football family members is to ensure that the Premier League votes go toward ending the dictatorial 12-year reign of the incumbent FFB President when that election is called.
