Leukemia patient, 10, kicked in face by circus horse; right eye damaged

GeneralLeukemia patient, 10, kicked in face by circus horse; right eye damaged

Jevon said that he had gone to see the animals and after being asked to move from around the cages with the tigers, he went to see one of the horses, which was on the perimeter of the fence that faces the Belize River. He was the only one there, initially, but a group of children then gathered around the horse as well, Jevon told Amandala.

As Jevon sat in his living room recalling his horrifying accident, he explained to the newspaper that the horses were left to roam freely around the circus show grounds. He alleged that a boy, who appeared to be much older than he, then pushed him into the horse for no apparent reason. Jevon noted that the older boy was still wearing his school uniform, and he believes that he could identify the boy if he sees him again. When Jevon was pushed into the horse, it is likely that the horse was startled, causing it to kick him in his right eye. The impact of the horse?s kick caused Jevon to fly backward onto the ground. He immediately got up off the ground and ran home to his mother.

Lanza told Amandala that she heard Jevon screaming for her as he was running into the yard. She said that when she rushed outside the house, she saw blood streaming down his face and a piece of what appeared to be flesh protruding from his right eye.

Jevon was immediately taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but later, he had to be taken to the Belize Diagnostic Center to get a CAT scan.

The impact from the powerful blow has possibly caused permanent damage in Jevon?s right eye. Lanza said that the doctors have told her that when her son?s eye heals, the eye might not be able to discern the details of objects, only their outlines.

Jevon is brave for getting up after the horse kicked him and running home, said Lanza, as she sat next to her son with her arm around his shoulder.

When Jevon was 9 years old, he was diagnosed with leukemia, a fatal, cancerous disease. Since his diagnosis, Jevon has to go to Merida almost every two months for medical attention, and while his doctor?s fee is reasonable, the cost of his medications is exorbitant, explained Lanza.

Lanza said that they were scheduled to go to Merida early last week, but that the trip had been postponed.

Jevon, a Standard III student at All Saints Primary School, was not in school on Friday because he was not feeling well. He is, however, anxious to return to school, which should be after his mother takes him to Merida for his regular check-up.

Lanza, a single mother of three, said that she already relies on financial aid from her family to pay for her son?s medical treatment, and that it will be all the more difficult to locate additional funding for him to see an optometrist in Merida. She explained that because of his leukemia, it is very risky for him to undergo surgery because he could lose a lot of blood. She said that it is important that he goes to Merida as soon as possible, because she feels that he lost a lot of blood from the accident. Most leukemia patients also have to contend with anemia ? a blood deficiency.

Lanza is in the process of raising funds again to take Jevon to Merida as soon as possible, since she had to use her available funds for his treatment after the accident on Friday.

A close friend of the family had gone to see the circus? ringleader, and was reportedly told that the circus does not intend to take any responsibility in Jevon?s accident because the children were not supposed to be on the show grounds at that time.

Lanza also said that her family had gone to the police to see if anything could be done, but the police told them that it is likely that only the boy that pushed Jevon could be charged in the accident. Lanza said, however, that her family does not intend to pursue the matter from that angle.
