BELIZE CITY, Mon. Jan. 24, 2022– On Friday night, at around 9:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on Beltex Crescent in the Belama Phase 1 area. When they went to the scene, they found Virgil Everett Coburn, better known as “Pocket”, a 33-year-old Belizean enforcement officer who lived in Belama Phase 2, suffering from gunshot wounds to his body.

According to police, around 9:15 p.m., Coburn was on Beltex Crescent in front of a residence, waiting for food he had ordered from a snack shop to be delivered, when a vehicle approached and stopped in front of the yard, and someone inside the vehicle fired a barrage of shots.

Police later recovered several expended shells from the scene.

“We must say that our investigators have gathered useful information that they believe [that] will lead to the identity of these assailants.” stated the Police Department’s Communications Director, ASP Fritzroy Yearwood, in reference to the shooting.

Coburn was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating.
