HighlightsMayor Darrell Bradley will run for 2nd term

Today’s marathon press conference which was held by Prime Minister Dean Barrow consisted of two parts, the first half of which dealt with Belize City Council matters, among them, the political future of current UDP Belize City Mayor, Darrell Bradley.

After over 3 months of vacillation as to whether Bradley would throw his hat in the ring, today, long after the passing of the March 28 deadline, Barrow, Bradley’s party leader, announced that Bradley’s name will be on the ballot in another bid for mayoralty in the upcoming 2015 Belize City municipal elections.

Barrow said that an understanding had been reached between the Mayor and the two aspirants who were waiting to potentially replace him – present UDP Belize City Deputy Mayor, B.Q. Pitts, Jr., and former Belize City Deputy Mayor and present Councilor, Dion Leslie.

Barrow said that he was “very pleased” over Bradley’s candidacy.

The Mayor attributed the solving of his “difficult” decision to Barrow’s support.

Bradley said that he was “100% committed” to doing “far more” than he has done in this first term.

So while the Mayor’s dreams of vying for politics on the national level are apparently at a standstill, he boasted that not only is Belize City itself transforming, but also that the inhabitants are benefitting from the revitalization and reclamation of community spaces.

Dion Leslie is currently out of the country, but had previously made mention of his intention to leave the race in favor of Bradley in May of this year.

In doing the same today, Pitts endorsed the Mayor’s leadership, claiming that at least 90% of the Council’s promises to the Belize City residents have been fulfilled.

The PM, Mayor and Deputy Mayor were all of the opinion that there was no need to elect another party in light of promises of continued infrastructure works on the heels of a current $3.8 million implementation of the second phase of the Belize City infrastructure project.
