Mayor’s Cup finals

DANGRIGA, Wed. July 26, 2017–Here are the results from the Dangriga Mayor’s Cup 2017 championship finals last Sunday at the Carl Ramos Stadium, where thousands of football fans from all over the country of Belize and elsewhere turned out in numbers… sold out bleachers, hundreds of standees, sold out Carl Ramos Stadium in drinks and food!

Coming to the games, in the third-place match-up, DYFA won over Department of Youth Services, 4 goals to 1.

In game two, which was the big championship showdown, it was a wonderful, beautiful game between both teams; but at the end of regular time, the Belize Coast Guards proved to everyone they are the better team throughout the Mayor’s Cup Tournament by winning the Mayor’s Cup championship final over Harrison “Cafu” Roches’ team, the Pomona Warriors, by a score of 3 goals to 1. Orwin “Sonny” Wade, Brian Martinez and Steven “Seed” Martinez all got 1 apiece for the Belize Coast Guards. Pomona Warriors’ only goal came from the Mayor’s Cup “Most Goals” scorer, Alexander “Pleck” Peters.

Belize Coast Guards was crowned the Dangriga Mayor’s Cup Champion 2017-2018. They received $6,000.00, first-place medals and also the Mayor’s Cup. Pomona Warriors received $3,000.00, second-place trophy and medals. Third-place DYFA received $1,500.00, third-place trophy and medals.

Awards
Individual awards were: MVP – Brian Martinez (Belize Coast Guards); Best Midfield – Steven “Seed” Martinez (Belize Coast Guards); Best Defence – Edward Lawrence (Belize Coast Guards); Most Goals Scorer – Alexander “Pleck” Peters (Pomona Warriors); Rookie of the Mayor’s Cup Season – Davis Marshall, Jr. (DYFA); Best Coach – Wilder Ellington (Belize Coast Guards); Best Manager – Danny Garbutt (Belize Coast Guards); and Most Disciplined Team – Belize Coast Guards.

Dangriga Town Council and the Mayor’s Cup executives would like to say Thanks to all teams who took part in this year’s tournament; all the fans who came out every weekend to cheer for their teams; the Police Officers who always control security; Stann Creek Football Association; the game officials; and also the big sponsors who made this season possible – Travellers Liquors; Mr. “Maito” Perdomo, who was also at the game distributing awards on behalf of Travellers; Bowen and Bowen; also the local media houses in Dangriga – Hamalali Radio and DCV; and also over all Dangriga Town Council. This year 2017 Dangriga Mayor’s Cup tournament was a big, big, huge success!!
