Memorial Park being turned into pedestrian walk

GeneralMemorial Park being turned into pedestrian walk
What had been one of Belize City’s longstanding recreational and historical landmarks, the Memorial Park, is undergoing complete demolition, as the Belize Tourism Board is undertaking a project for the construction of the Fort Point Pedestrian Walk Project—a BZ$5.5 million project.

When Amandala visited the site on Friday, most of the concrete structures, including the pavilion, sidewalk and park benches, had already been demolished, and the landscaping uprooted.

The project is a part of the Belize Sustainable Tourism Project, being undertaken by the Belize Tourism Board.

Last month, BTB had announced that International Environments Ltd. had won the bid for the construction of the Belize City Fort Point Pedestrian Walk.

The BTB says, “The works will consist of the rehabilitation of streets from the Swing Bridge, along North Front Street to Fort Street and inclusive of North and South Park Street and Cork Street. A complete renovation of the Memorial Park will take place, earthworks and drainage, with a focus on the Memorial and local celebrations components in balance with the tourism activities to be added.”

The plan calls for public restrooms, kiosks for vendors, a plaza, seating, and gazebo, a new stage and amphitheater seating, as well as continuous street lighting.

The construction period spans from February 2012 to February 2013.

The executing ministry is the Ministry of Tourism, and financing comes from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)
