Two Mexican policemen remanded to prison

InternationalTwo Mexican policemen remanded to prison

They were looking for drugs, say Belize law enforcement officials

BELIZE CITY, Fri, Oct. 5, 2012

Two of three rogue policemen from neighboring Chetumal, Mexico, have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison in Hattieville until December 19, by order of Magistrate Clive Lino in the Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October, 4, on charges of wounding, handling stolen goods and aggravated assault.

The two Mexican officers pleaded not guilty to the charges, but they were remanded to prison due to the nature of the offenses. Police prosecutor Sergeant Wolric Simpson presented the case, and the defense council was attorney Hubert Elrington.

Police said that Mexican policemen Walter Lopez Cordova, 46, and Francisco Javier Gamboa, 24, crossed the Belize-Mexico border into Chunox Village in the Corozal District, and went into the home of Julius Foreman and his common-law wife, Darlene Cabral, around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, and held them up at gunpoint, demanding money and drugs.

Two of the gunmen beat up Foreman and pistol-whip him. Cabral was also beaten, and tied up. A gun was aimed at her head, and she was told that she would be killed if they didn’t give them money and drugs. The gunmen then stole cell phones amounting to about $2,260.00, and $1,500.00 in cash, and escaped using her husband’s vehicle, a Chevrolet 4-door double-cab pickup truck valued at $18,000.00. The total value of items stolen came up to $21,760.00.

Foreman told police that around 7:00 p.m., he drove up into his yard with Cabral and their two children. Three Hispanic men were waiting for him, and when he exited his vehicle, two of them attacked and beat him, and demanded money. He said that they stomped, kicked, and beat him, and as a result of the severe beating, he is unable to eat. He said that he managed to run away, and they fired at him.

Corozal police said they intercepted the men at the ferry, but they ran into the bushes. Police chased them, but they were unable to catch them at that time.

However, they carried out an intense search in Corozal and found two of the three men. One was found in the Santa Rita Hill area and the other was found on the Philip Goldson Highway walking towards the border. They were taken to the Orange Walk Police Station, where three high-ranking police officers from Chetumal confirmed that the two were policemen from Chetumal.

Foreman and Cabral also pointed out the two men during a lineup, identifying them as the gunmen who came to their house and beat and robbed them.

Police are convinced that the rogue Mexican policemen are looking for drugs, which reportedly landed during a “wet drop” in the area.

The third police outlaw has not yet been captured. Mexican police said that the men will be dismissed from the Mexican Judicial State Police.
