MOA and BLPA invest in a corral for cattle export

GeneralMOA and BLPA invest in a corral for cattle export

BELMOPAN, Fri. Oct. 29, 2021 — Today, Friday, October 29, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), represented by Servulo Baeza, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry, and Ramon Galvez, chairman of the BLPA, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) that will authorize the use of a corral and scale in the Dump Community of the Toledo District as part of an effort to increase the exportability of Belize’s cattle.

The corral will be used primarily to hold cattle suitable for trade and it will make it possible for such cattle to be quarantined in order to ensure that they do not contract diseases — a key requirement to gain access to additional cattle markets and to form long-term agreements with cattle buyers.

The corral, built by the BLPA, cost approximately $28,000 and was erected on land acquired by the Ministry of Agriculture. This development in the cattle industry will directly benefit cattle farmers in Toledo who actively participate in the export of cattle to Guatemala through the Jalacte border.

Thus far, exports by Belize’s cattle industry have generated $40 million this year.
