Mother, 28, and son, 8, die in traffic accident

GeneralMother, 28, and son, 8, die in traffic accident
Sylvania Vellos, 28, a resident of San Andres in the Corozal District, and her son, Jaime Moreno, 8, died on the spot this morning in a traffic accident in Orange Walk District. Sylvania’s other two children are hospitalized – they miraculously survived the accident. Sylvania’s vehicle is crushed beyond identification.

Police said that sometime around 11:15 this morning, they were called to an area between Miles 56 and 57 on the Northern Highway. When they arrived at the location, which is about half a mile away from Trial Farm, in the middle of the road they saw a black Toyota pickup truck, bearing license plate Czl-C-12726, and which had a board box, completely destroyed.

They also observed a white Dodge Ram pickup, bearing license plate SC-C-7458, on the far right hand side of the road, with extensive damage to the front left side.

Police said that they saw the lady, later identified as Vellos, on the other side of the road, with severe trauma to the face and all over the body. About six feet away from her, police saw a child, identified as Jaime, also with severe trauma to the head and body. Both died on the spot.

In the vehicle traveling along with Vellos at the time, was her other two sons, Benjamin, 6, and Crescencio Moreno, 10. Benjamin was first taken to the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH), but later was transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he is admitted to ward. Crescencio is listed in a serious condition at the NRH.

Police investigations revealed that Sylvania was driving her Toyota from the direction of Corozal to Orange Walk, when she somehow ran into the wrong lane and collided with the Dodge pickup, traveling in the opposite direction.

At the time the Dodge pickup was being driven by Eddie Usher, 36, a businessman who resides at #2 Pen Road in Dangriga Town. Traveling with him at the time were his daughter, Melissa Usher, 3, who received a cut wound to her forehead and abrasions; Lynden Larios, 20, a resident of 18 ½ Miles Stann Creek Valley Road; and Rosbin Bolanos, of the same address.

Police said that the crime scene was processed and photographed, and they have detained Usher pending an investigation into the accident.

A post-mortem will be conducted on the body of the victims tomorrow at the KHMH.
