National Amateur League Inter-District Semifinal Game 2 results; two Belize City teams in Finals

SportsNational Amateur League Inter-District Semifinal Game 2 results; two Belize City teams in Finals

BELIZE CITY, Mon. July 1, 2019– The National Amateur League Championship (NALC), which started with 20 teams, 2 each from the 10 football regions of the country, is now down to the final two teams, after completion of the semifinal 2nd leg games this past weekend; and the two teams left standing to square off in the championship finals are the two Belize City squads – Barrack Road FC and Caesar Ridge FC.

The first to clinch a spot in the finals was Caesar Ridge FC, who followed last week’s 2-nil win over Roaring Creek FC at the MCC Grounds with a 2-1 win on Saturday night, June 29, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, to come away with the aggregate 4-1 score. Orlando “Bredda” Velasquez (20’) put Caesar Ridge in front. An own goal by Caesar Ridge’s Tyrel Estrada (82’ OG) briefly knotted the score at 1-1, but Estrada made up for his error with a good goal in injury time (90+’) for Caesar Ridge to give them the 2-1 road win.

Then on Sunday, on a wet MCC after intermittent morning showers, it was Barrack Road FC hosting defending champion Club Atletico from Belmopan, after they had played to a 1-1 draw in the 1st leg at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium last week. Francis Andrews (4’) struck early for Barrack Road on Sunday, and the half ended 1-nil in favor of Barrack Road. Arnoldo Delarosa (71’ PK) equalized for Club Atletico from the penalty spot; but four minutes later, it was Barrack Road’s turn at the penalty spot, and their leading goal scorer, Steven Baizar, who was serving a suspension in the 1st leg, converted at the 75th minute, to give Barrack Road FC the 2-1 victory, and the 3-2 aggregate series win.

There were reportedly some incidents following Barrack Road’s penalty score, and the game was blown off by the referee, but we have received no official confirmation of any actions or sanctions.

The stage is now set for the finals, which are a home-and-away series featuring both Belize City teams, so both games are at the MCC. The league has not scheduled a third place game.

Championship schedule (home team listed first):

Sunday, July 7
4:00 p.m. – Barrack Road FC vs Caesar Ridge FC  –  MCC Grounds
Sunday, July 14
4:00 p.m. – Caesar Ridge FC vs Barrack Road FC  –  MCC Grounds
