BELIZE CITY, Wed. July 15, 2020– Police announced that the Annual Police Week events that are usually held in July have been cancelled due to financial cuts, and a National Citizen Appreciation Day was instead observed today at all formations countrywide. The day had been set aside to give police the opportunity to honor all those who partnered with police to ensure a safer community.

The theme of the National Appreciation Day 2020 is “Honoring and partnering with us for a safer Belize.”

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that the events usually held during police week would have incurred too much additional costs in these times of financial difficulty, but by means of the National Appreciation Day, police are recognizing and awarding all those who have been working with them throughout the year, through triumphs and difficulties.

He said that police celebrate the success that has been possible through the support, dedication and cooperation of others in the community, and he said that he is very grateful.

Twenty-five persons were awarded certificates and plaques, including Michael Reid; Cruzita Leslie; Santiago Castillo and Company, Ltd.; Fair Brothers; and Grace Flowers, Senior Justice of the Peace. Williams thanked them for their continued support.

Deputy Police Commissioner Deseree Magdaleno said that they started off the morning with a vehicle checkpoint — but it was a courtesy vehicle check point, where drivers were given bumper stickers and flyers that told them, “Thank you for your support.”

After that, an Open Day was held, where all units displayed their roles and functions and the services that they offered, and educated people about the department’s procedures, including how to obtain a police report.

The highlight of the day was the ceremony at which awards were given to outstanding citizens who have been supporting police. The event was held at all formations at the same time, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
