SportsNAWL semifinals over

Finals game 1 this Saturday at the MCC for the National Amateur Women League

BELIZE CITY, Mon. May 29, 2017-After both National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) semifinals Game 1 were drawn, the decisive Game 2 were scheduled for this past Saturday, but only one semifinal was actually played. That is because Sagitun Strikers from Independence forfeited their scheduled game on Saturday night at the MCC, where Belize City FC got the victory by default, and will now move on to the best-of-2 games championship series.

The other semifinal Game 2 was played on Sunday evening at the FFB Stadium, where Jewel Fury FC of Belmopan came away with the 3-nil win over Gladiators FC from Orange Walk. It was a very well-played game, despite the few fans in attendance. The difference turned out to be the speed advantage of young Fury striker, Ashley Rodriguez over the Gladiators’ central defenders. Matching speed with tremendous skill, Ashley gave Jewel Fury the lead at the 30th minute of first half, when she broke away from the defence and expertly beat the oncoming Gladiator goalie before tapping into the open net. The Fury got two more goals in second half, from Jayda Brown (68’) and Gisel Baeza (91’) to seal the 3-0 win and a spot in the finals.

The Big Dance for the National Amateur Women Tournament begins in Belize City this weekend featuring the old capital versus the new.

Saturday, June 3, Finals Game 1
7:30 p.m. – Belize City FC vs Jewel Fury FC – MCC Grounds
