HighlightsNew Chairman of the National AIDS Commission (NAC)

BELIZE CITY. Fri. Feb. 5, 2021– Dr. Giovanni Solorzano, a local doctor who is a San Pedro resident, has been appointed to be the new chairperson of the National AIDS Commission (NAC)/Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM).

The National AIDS Commission of Belize aims to provide recent and relevant information on HIV for persons living with, or at risk of contracting the virus, as well as health professionals, and other stakeholders in the HIV response. In his capacity as chairperson of the commission, Dr. Solorzano will monitor and facilitate Belize’s response to HIV and AIDS, in an effort to minimize the spread of HIV while providing support for those living with HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Solorzano has spent over 30 years of his life in the medical field. He previously worked with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as a Maternal and Family Child Health Consultant, and also acted as Clinical Director at the San Pedro Polyclinic II, and as Deputy Director of Health Services at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where he was responsible for ensuring quality of treatment.

Dr. Solorzano has also previously served as an appointee of the Government of Belize. In October 1991, he had been appointed as a member of the National Steering Health Reform Committee.

As of Wednesday, February 3, 2021, Dr. Solorzano officially replaced the previous NAC chairperson, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Laura Tucker-Longsworth.

A press release issued by the Office of the Prime Minister states, “The NAC/CCM welcomes the appointment of Dr. Solorzano and looks forward to working closely with him to drive the country’s response to HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis forward.”
