BELMOPAN, Tues. Feb. 2, 2021– In a press release issued by the University of Belize, the institution announced the names of the new members of its reconstructed Board of Trustees.

The university was notified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology of the appointment of seven (7) new members to the UB Board of Trustees. Those persons are Dr. Deysi Mendez, CEO of the Ministry of Health and Wellness; Mr. Eccelston Irving, former chairman of the Citrus Growers Association Board, who will serve as the private sector representative for the agriculture sector; Mr. Crescensio Sosa, Sr., former CEO in the Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance, who will serve as the private sector representative of industry; Mr. Anthony Sylvester Jr., former senator and legal advisor to the People’s United Party, who has been appointed to be the Education Minister’s representative; Mr. Lloyd A. Jones, retired major in the Belize Defence Force, who is the vice chairman of the Belize Peace Movement and will serve as the private sector representative for tourism; Dr. Yvonne Palma, who is the Education Officer; and Mr. Servulo Baeza, who is a former minister and the current CEO in the Ministry of Agriculture.

These newly appointed members will be joining eight (8) returning board members: Mr. Luke Palacio, former BNTU National President and current 1st Vice President serving as the National Trade Union Congress representative; Dr. June Young, lecturer and faculty representative; Mr. Fermin Magana, ATLIB representative; Mr. Steve Good, president of the UB student government, who will be serving as student representative; Dr. Fred Shyu, Belize Council of Churches representative; Mr. Clint Foreman, National Council for Education representative, and Dr. Oxaku Tehu Kax’oxo II, bionomics engineer and Non-Governmental and Civil Society representative.

In accordance with the UB Act of 2000, at a board meeting dated January 22, 2021, the newly established board named Mr. Anthony Sylvester, Jr., as its chairman and Major Lloyd A. Jones as its vice chairman.

“The Board expressed its great desire to further the development of the University as the National Institution and echoed the sentiments that this can bring tremendous opportunities for Belize’s young people and Belize’s own advancement. The new Board also thanked the former Board of Trustees for its work in advancing the cause of UB,” the university’s press release said.
