One charged for robbing women

CrimeOne charged for robbing women
Police reported that they have arrested and charged Kareem “Stamma” Smith, 19, whom they say is responsible for robbing a woman who was in the company of another woman on Monday of this week.

Yesterday, Smith appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read charges for two counts of burglary.

Smith was not offered bail and was hence remanded to the Hattieville prison until his next court date, scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, 2007.

Police said that they detained Smith, a resident of St. Jude Street, shortly after the incident, which involved Alma Rivera, 38, and her sister-in-law, Glenda Scabia, because they were conducting a patrol in the area at the time and heard the cries for help.

Rivera reported that sometime around 8:30 on Monday morning, August 27, they were walking along 6th Street in Kings Park, when they were approached by a dark-skinned man, who was riding a bicycle.

The man allegedly pulled out a sharp object and put it at her side, said Rivera. He then robbed her of a Siemens gray and silver phone and three gold rings. He then quickly tried to make his escape, but that was when police caught up with him after hearing the ladies’ cries for help.

He was caught just a couple blocks away from where the incident occurred.

Police said, though, that they only recovered one gold ring and the cellular phone. He was also found with a knife, which police believes is the sharp object Rivera felt put to her side.
