InternationalP.M. Barrow to New York
Prime Minister, the Hon. Dean O. Barrow, leaves Belize today, Wednesday, for New York City where he will participate in the New York Conference on the Caribbean along with other CARICOM leaders. The conference, scheduled for June 19-20, will primarily focus on education and investment, as well as facilitate engagement with the Caribbean Diaspora.

At the 28th meeting of CARICOM Heads in July, 2007, Heads of Government met with Congressman Charles Rangel, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the US House to Representatives, and engaged in an exchange of views on a number of issues of interest to the Caribbean Community.

An invitation was extended by Congressman Rangel to CARICOM Heads to visit New York and it was proposed that the visit take place in June 2008 to coincide with Caribbean American Heritage Month.   A proposal was also made at that meeting that a Conference on the Caribbean be held in New York as part of this visit.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Hon. Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, and the Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms. Audrey Wallace.

The Belizean delegation is scheduled to return home on Monday, June 23. During the Prime Minister’s absence from the country, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Gaspar Vega, will serve as Acting Prime Minister.
