Pioneer getting ready for new adventures

FeaturesPioneer getting ready for new adventures

Emerson Guild told Amandala today that currently, he and his uncle are repairing and fitting the boat to be able to hold 6 fishing rigs and a 5,000-pound capacity storage cabin. The idea is to spend five-day trips at sea fishing between central and southern Belize as they teach young people to catch a fish rather than merely giving them one.

Jack Guild, an old seaman, told us that he bought the boat in 1987 from a man named Mr. Gomez. He said that he had been using the boat as a tugboat, but it had been out of commission for the past three years.

Emerson, who normally holds football camp in the summer for young people, is not holding the camp this year. His focus is on getting Pioneer ready for launch as early as September.

He said that his plan is to engage 30 young people, but already, 38 have registered. Initially, five of them will be taken on sea to learn navigational and fishing skills. Emerson Guild himself claims to be ?green? at this type of venture and so he has engaged Captain Eric Kisling, an international sea captain, to instruct them in the discipline of navigation.

Once the youths master their fishing skills, they would learn other skills, such as processing the products for sale on the market under the entity, Ocean Fresh Seafood.

Guild said that other youths are welcome to sign up, since he wants to help as many young people as possible.

The entire venture is being done under Emergent Corp, a non-government organization, and its affiliate, Belize Action Community, a program for life enhancement that focuses on empowerment programs for young people. Apart from yearly football camps, the organization has also begun to impart woodwork skills to youths, as well as self-development training to develop their thinking, listening, learning and productive skills.

Their vision extends beyond the younger generation to include mentors, teachers and parents.

BAC adopts Malcolm X?s philosophy that, ?Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.?
