Police charge Mario Huezo, 32, for the murder of his elderly parents

GeneralPolice charge Mario Huezo, 32, for the murder of his elderly parents

ORANGE WALK TOWN, Thurs. Dec. 19, 2019– At about 9:00 Monday morning, the eldest son of Rafael Huezo, 80, and his wife, Nancy Huezo, 75, went to check on them at their home on Stadium Street in Orange Walk Town and found them both dead, in a state of decomposition.

At about 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, police reported that the main suspect in the murder of the elderly couple — Mario Huezo, 32, the couple’s youngest son, had been captured in Independence Village in the Stann Creek District.

During the weekly police press brief held this morning at the Queen Street Police Station, Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero told us that Mario Huezo was returned to Orange Walk Town on his release from the Southern Regional Hospital after he was treated for self-inflicted injures, and he was charged with 2 counts of murder for the death of his father, Rafael Huezo, and his mother, Nancy Huezo.

He is currently detained pending arraignment at the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court for the horrendous death of his parents.

After the bodies of the murdered couple were found, a countrywide bulletin was issued for the family’s vehicle, which was missing, and a wanted poster was also issued for the arrest of Mario Huezo, whom police identified as the primary suspect.

Police said that they saw the family’s vehicle traveling on the Southern Highway, going from Santa Cruz towards Independence, and they pursued it and tried to stop it, but the driver did not stop and drove toward the Mango Creek Port.

Police said that they shot one of the vehicle’s tires, and this forced the driver to stop.

They approached the window of the vehicle on the driver’s side and asked the driver, Huezo, to step out, and that was when he took out what seemed to be a gun, causing the police to take cover. They then saw him take out a knife and slash his throat.

Police said they immediately shot the vehicle’s door lock, forced the door open and took Huezo out of the vehicle, thereby preventing him from further harming himself.

On closer examination, police discovered that the object that Huezo had had in his hand was not a gun.

Mario Huezo was then handcuffed and taken to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga, where he is being treated under police guard.

Neighbors of the murdered couple told police that Mario Huezo was seen on Friday evening at home with his parents on Stadium Street, and he was intoxicated. Police believe that his parents were killed sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.

When the bodies of the couple were found by their eldest son, who went to check on them after his sister told him that she had not been able to contact them all weekend, Mario Huezo and the couple’s vehicle had disappeared.

It is not yet known why Rafael and Nancy Huezo were killed.

Rafael and Nancy Huezo were buried in Orange Walk Town on Tuesday. In speaking about them on CTV 3 News Orange Walk, Mayor Kevin Bernard, of Orange Walk, said that Rafael and Nancy Huezo were model citizens, and it hurts to see what has been done to them.
