GeneralPolice officer charged with kidnapping girlfriend

PUNTA GORDA, Wed. Sept. 2, 2020– Constable Dwayne Sutherland, who is attached to the Punta Gorda police, has been released on bail of $10,000 on a charge of kidnapping. He is scheduled to return to court on November 25.

His hearing was held in the Punta Gorda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 31, 2020, in front of Magistrate Ivy Pitts.

Sutherland’s former girlfriend, Alisha Valerio, 20, told police that on August 4, he took her against her will to his house, where he handcuffed her to a bed and assaulted her.

After the ordeal, when Sutherland had left the house, she was able to escape with the help of Sutherland’s neighbors, and she went to police.

Valerio told police that this is the third time that she has been kidnapped and assaulted by the police officer.

An investigation was carried out into the report, after which a file containing the findings of the investigation was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who gave directives that the officer be arrested and charged with kidnapping.

Police said that a further investigation is being carried out into the theft of Valerio’s phone, which was found with the policeman, and at the conclusion of the investigation additional charges are expected to be levied against him.

Sutherland will also be charged internally by police for violation of the Police Code of Conduct. He will be taken before a police tribunal, which has the powers to impose a sentence on him if he is found guilty, which can include dismissal with disgrace.
