GeneralPolice ramp up efforts to prevent RTAs

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Nov. 29, 2021 — Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams has announced that, in order to address the increasing number of fatal traffic accidents in the country, he will be meeting with his regional, formational and precinct commanders to formulate new strategies and increase the department’s efforts to reduce the frequency of such incidents. The Commissioner of Police noted, however, that it is motorists who play the most significant role in decreasing the number and severity of traffic accidents, and he called on motorists to exhibit extra caution when on the road. He noted in particular the need for motorcyclists to abide by traffic laws. Williams said that many cyclists believe that the rules of the road do not apply to them. As a result, they engage in unsafe road safety practices such as overtaking on the wrong side of the road.

The Police Department, in conjunction with the Department of Traffic, will carry out a desensitizing campaign to educate road users of the importance of road safety. In addition to this campaign, Williams has pledged to increase police presence on major roadways. This will include increased highway patrols and random checkpoints across the country of Belize.
