Principal Denroy Tillett charged for indecent assault; claims innocence

EducationPrincipal Denroy Tillett charged for indecent assault; claims innocence
Amandala learned that on Tuesday of this week, Denroy Tillett, principal of Belmopan Comprehensive High School, was arrested by police due to a report which was made by the female security guard of the school.

According to the report, he grabbed her buttocks when he was walking by. It was a little unclear on whether or not he would be criminally charged, but we learned that he was arraigned in court.

Tillett was arraigned before Magistrate Adolph Lucas, Jr., in the City of Belmopan. He was represented by Legal Aid attorney Philip Palacio, and he pleaded not guilty to a single count of aggravated assault of an indecent nature.

Tillett was released on bail of $1,500, and he is expected back in court on December 20, 2010.

We spoke to Tillett today, and he told us that he is the 7th principal at Belmopan Comprehensive High School to be removed. He said that it is a group of teachers who are in direct conflict with him because he won’t allow them to do as they please. It was a malicious act, geared toward damaging his reputation irreparably, he said.

He told us that Ministry of Education officials came and did their own investigation, and found that it was an act of malice. He said that they are expected to return sometime next week for a follow up. He told us that any of his colleagues from his past places of employment can vouch for him, because he has not been accused of something like this before.

He also told us that after all this has finished, he would like a very public apology from his accuser. He said that he is very mad and didn’t appreciate what she has done to his public image, his face being posted in the media.

We also spoke to one of his colleagues, who told us that there is no way that he can believe this woman’s allegations, because he knows Tillett personally. He said that the law leaves a lot to be desired in terms of fairness if a woman can make a baseless claim of harassment and have the police and the courts charge an innocent man.
