“Pungo B,” charged with robbery, pleads innocence, said he was in wrong place at wrong time

Crime“Pungo B,” charged with robbery, pleads innocence, said he was in wrong place at wrong time
Woodcarver Norman Gillett, 34, a.k.a. “Pungo B,” one of three men who the police believe robbed truck driver Eulogio Solis, 36, was charged with robbery when he appeared today in the #3 Magistrate’s Court.

The prosecution objected to bail, but the magistrate, Roberto Ordonez, who at first had decided to remand him into custody, changed his mind and offered Gillett bail because the police had not conducted an identification parade, and Gillett said that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Gillett was offered bail of $5,000, and was told to return to court on September 27.

The incident occurred about 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, August 25. Solis reported to the police that while he was walking on Vernon Street, he saw three men on bicycles looking at him.

Solis said that as he stepped into Mando’s apartment complex, the trio, armed with two knives and a machete, attacked him. One of the assailants pushed his hand into Solis’ pocket and stole his wallet, which contained $100, his Nova Scotia Bank credit card and his social security card.

The robbers fled, with Solis pursuing them.

Fortunately, a police patrol vehicle appeared on Vernon Street. Two of the robbers, however, dropped their bicycles and escaped in the direction of Johnson Street.

Gillett said he did not run because he was not one of the robbers, but Solis, in the police’s presence, pointed him out as one of them.

“The police did not even bother to ask me anything; they kicked me in my ribs, took my own machete and lashed me with it, and then threw me into the canal by Vernon Street Bridge,” said Gillett.

Gillett said he was about to tell the police who he saw rob Solis when they accosted him. To emphasize that he was an honest, hardworking citizen, Gillett showed the rough palms of his hands to those who were present in court.

The police say they are searching for the two other men.
