PUP’s Elvia Vega-Samos wins Corozal Bay by-elections

PoliticsPUP's Elvia Vega-Samos wins Corozal Bay by-elections

COROZAL, Wed. Mar. 3, 2021– The Elections and Boundaries Department has released the official stats on the Corozal Bay by-election. Elvia “Elvie” Vega-Samos, the sister of the late David “Dido” Vega, emerged victorious.

Readers would recall that shortly after the November 2020 general elections, Dido passed away due to severe respiratory illness caused by Covid-19 and left a void in the Corozal Bay constituency. This void has since been filled by his sister, who defeated former four-time UDP mayor Hilberto Campus by about 1200 votes.

A total of 4132 votes were cast by a total of 5712 registered voters in the area — a 72.34% voter turnout. Of those voters, around 64.35% or 2659 persons voted for Vega-Samos and 1428 or 34.54% voted for the UDP’s Hilberto Campus, making Elvia Vega-Samos the duly elected area representative for the Corozal Bay electoral division.

Her campaign was run as a tribute to her brother, under the theme “Dis One Da Fi Dido!” Around 45 votes were rejected in the by-election.
