The northern part of the country was also affected. This morning, a driver transporting teachers between Caledonia and Buena Vista, Corozal District, lost control of his vehicle because of rising water in the area.

Reports are that waters have been rising in the area between San Pedro Village and the Northern Highway, and between Libertad and Buena Vista Villages. These floods are less than a foot high.

Out west commuters are advised to be cautious as they travel on the low-lying bridge that connects San Ignacio and Benque Viejo Towns. According to National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), the bridge, which surprisingly has not become flooded, is very slippery on the surface.

Yesterday morning, small vehicles that were traveling near Camalote Village area were asked to exercise extreme caution. The Iguana Creek Bridge had almost ten inches of water.

Due to flooding in Seven Miles Village, five families had to evacuate to their friends? homes. They returned to their home yesterday.

The Macal River, which had risen, is slowly subsiding. The culvert in the Cristo Rey Village is still washed out and the road is closed. The Baking Pot Ferry is also closed.

Bus runs in Southern Belize that were stopped on Tuesday, January 24, began normal operation yesterday. No runs were done on the Coastal Road, due to uncertainty of the condition of the unpaved road.

This morning Our Lady of the Way Roman Catholic School in Ladyville, closed due to the weather, was reopened. On Tuesday, January 24, students from almost all primary, secondary and tertiary schools were unable to attend school due to the rains; some of the floods on the major streets, and on the highways close to the city, were more than a foot deep.

According to NEMO officials, the areas most affected were in the Cayo District and the Western Highway. There were no reports of livestock being affected, or fatalities from flooding.

On Tuesday, a flash flood occurred between Miles 46 and 47, and traffic was backed up for about six hours, which caused some commuters to become stranded.

The flash flood had caused a bus, which carried approximately 20 people, to slide off the road. A truck that was traveling in the same direction was also swept off the road. No one was injured, and with the assistance of heavy machinery, the people were rescued, and the bus and truck were towed to safety.

According to sources in Belmopan, due to the hard rains on Tuesday, an unknown driver in a pickup knocked down Manuel Tot, 30, of Maya Mopan. Eyewitnesses say that Manuel rode in front of the truck, and because of the wet road, the truck was unable to stop in time. Manuel suffered injuries to his legs.

The unpaved roads in the DFC area, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, were flooded and were in bad condition.

Buses that ran in Belama Phase Three had to discontinue their runs, because the streets in that area were flooded and drivers feared that their buses would become bogged on the unpaved streets.

There have also been reports of flooding in parts of Gracie Rock and Hattieville.

On Tuesday, Amandala toured various streets in Belize City, and observed that most of the streets that experienced flooding were in the Southside, and a few were in the Buttonwood Bay area.

Residents of Belize City expressed frustration as they walked through the flooded streets on Tuesday. What became repetitive statements from the pedestrians were, ?We need proper drainage for our streets.?

The need for more ?proper drainage? was echoed by NEMO. Water outlets on Douglas Jones Street were seen clogged by garbage, which prevented the free flow of waters from the heavy rain.

Officials at the National Meteorological Services forecast that the heavy rains will persist until Saturday, January 28.
