Seven years after he disappeared while diving in the Blue Hole, remains suspected to be those of Dr. Ruben Delgado, 43, a cardiologist of Miami, Florida, U.S.A., were discovered on the floor of the Hole by two Polish divers two weeks ago today.
Dr. Delgado, Amandala research indicates, became separated from a team of divers he accompanied while ascending from a depth of 130 feet into the Hole on August 5, 2001. Initial searches of the area turned up nothing.
However, the vacationing divers, identified as Artur Dabrowski and Emil Lisowski, were touring the Hole on the night of December 3, around 7:00 , when, at a depth of about 300 feet, they came upon an intact diving suit, with oxygen tank, apparently containing Dr. Delgado’s body. A camera Dr. Delgado had carried with him, also intact, was recovered and taken up by the divers.
At press time, the body had not been recovered, to the police’s knowledge.
According to police, there are logistical problems with the operations (our source declined to elaborate), although the divers say they are willing to assist. Efforts to contact Dr. Delgado’s family by the U.S. Embassy have been unsuccessful.
