BELIZE CITY, Tues. Mar. 21, 2023

Rugby Belize will be visiting some schools in the country from Tuesday, March 21, to next Monday, March 27, with a mission to introduce the students to the sport of rugby.

Rugby Belize has brought in Darren Morris, a former Wales international rugby union player who also represented the British & Irish Lions and played professionally for 18 years with multiple teams, and Lee Mears, a retired rugby union player who played as a hooker and played professionally for almost 15 years until his retirement in 2013.

“The idea behind it is to grow the support, grow some grassroots rugby over there in Belize to get more kids involved in it. The guys are retired internationals; they are here to help promote the sport for us and grow it,” said Daniel Nicolle, Director of Rugby for Rugby Belize.

“… it’s absolutely massive to have two international guys who have retired but still got the name to carry through the sport, so to have someone like that to help Rugby Belize is fantastic news; it’s going to help us get bigger and bigger,” he added.

Rugby Belize will be visiting a few schools within Belize City such as Belize Elementary, and its upper level, Belize High School, and Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio Town, Cayo District. But before the group went out to the other schools, they visited Stella Maris School on their first day; and Rodvern Lino, Director for Special Olympics Belize, told Amandala how thankful he was that the group interacted with the kids.

“It’s been a while since we’ve got something like this, new, to be introduced to our students. I am so happy that they are actually here to do this initial presentation of the sport,” Lino said.
