Russians at the border

FeaturesRussians at the border

I was reading an article in the NYT highlighting the fact that Russians fleeing the war, and who end up at the southern borders, are being detained in immigration prisons. They interviewed many of these detainees, who expected to be greeted with open arms, maybe have jobs waiting for them, a car, a house, a great salary, you know, the American dream? After all, they’re white, not from some third world country; preference should be a given, was expected, in fact!

I became very upset as I read this article, upset because of the hundreds of thousands from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, who are languishing in these detention centers, for months, sometimes for years before they get a hearing! Some were separated from their little children, when a different, less humane administration was in charge. The fact that these Russians made it all the way to the southern border meant that they had to travel across the world to get there. They could have asked for asylum in any of the dozens of countries they passed through on their way. But everyone has figured out that if you are not black or brown it’s much easier to get into the United States, no follow-up required. Listening to some of those detained, you could read in their statements how surprised they were at this roadblock to their access to “paradise?” ‘This shouldn’t be happening to us, who after all, were escaping Putin and his rogue regime.’

Well, my Russian friends, get in line like everyone else! No preferential treatment for you. And since you are Johnny-come-lately’s, you should expect to spend a very long time waiting to be processed, like everyone else is. There are people ahead of you who are suffering much more than you can ever begin to imagine. The Haitians, the Venezuelans, for example, who have lost all hope, no food, no jobs, no justice, no future! They have to be considered before anyone else, but will they be?

Running away from a war you oppose is not the same as escaping from a hell with no hope. You all allowed the Russian regime to get where it is, and now, because you might be drafted or because your lifestyle has been transformed by sanctions, you decide to leave and expect what? From whom? Just get in line. You will probably be admitted in, but it should be in the order of urgency, not because of your color or where you come from.

Giving these newcomers a pass would just demonstrate how unjust the immigration system is, even while it’s being administered by Democrats! It should not be a question of your geographic origins, but again, the validity and urgency of your claim. Wait your damn turn and stfu!
