San Ignacio resident found floating in river

CrimeSan Ignacio resident found floating in river

The lifeless body of a San Ignacio resident was found floating in a river near the village of Santa Familia, Cayo, this past Saturday.

According to San Ignacio police, 50-year-old Bernadette August reported that her son Giovanni August, 31, who resides on the George Price Highway, went to her residence at about 7:00 p.m. on Christmas Day, December 25, and was asking her for money.

August stated that she gave him the money, after which he left and had not been seen or heard from since.

Three days later, at about 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013, police reported that they visited an area in Santa Familia Village where they saw August’s body floating in the river.

A post-mortem conducted on Sunday revealed that he died from bronchial aspiration and alcoholic liver disease.

Another alcoholic’s floating body found

On Friday, December 27, police were called out to an area near Front Street, Punta Gorda, where they saw the body of a man floating in the sea, about 3 feet from the shore.

The man was identified as Arturo Alvarez, 68, a resident of the Water Supply Area of Punta Gorda.

He was retrieved from the water about 2:00 that same afternoon and taken to the Punta Gorda Hospital.

According to police, there were no signs of violence on his body.

The police investigations revealed that at around 8:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, Alvarez left home to an unknown destination – perhaps to drink alcohol as he is an alcoholic – and thereafter he went to swim in the sea, as he usually does.

That is where his body was later found.

Police say that they do not suspect foul play.
